![]() ![]() With that, I usually prefer old good legwork to any sort of zoom. Compared to what? The same camera with longer focal distance lens? Well, it may come even better with a crop, especially if one shoots from 1.4× distance and holds the camera by hand. However, I would take statements like "no image quality loss" with a pinch of salt. Also, the screen picture may give one a rough idea on what quality of image will be counting in atmospheric haze and turbulence. Then, you guaranteed that under no circumstance camera will focus on something out of your desired cropped field. But, if we crop from RAW (where applicable) there is a chance that with 5 minutes editing in Lightroom one will match what camera does in 5 seconds.įirst, you can compose image in-camera. The result comes as JPG not accidentally, camera uses modified algorythms to develop it from raw sensor data. Is it worth using "intelligent" (or whatever else extended) zoom instead of simply cropping the picture? I would say - yes, but that is conditional. At some other video selections I get over 1200mm. Using 4K photo video mode, I get up to over 600mm depending on the aspect ratio I select, and 8mp frames. Of course lenses would make a difference, I'm sure. I feel I'm not sacrificing any IQ with the FZ1000. The FZ1000 has a 20mp 1 inch sensor, and I find I can crop almost as much as I could using an E-M5 and the Panasonic 100-300mm, which I used for over 2 years. ![]() ![]() I have still been able to crop these images btw, and they are between 9 and 10 mps. The limited experimenting I've done gave some very impressive results, and the nice thing is that you don't lose any light as with a teleconverter. I will use it more this coming spring and summer, I've only had the camera for a few months. However, the lens is 25-400mm f2.8-f4.0, and using the extended feature, it becomes 25-800mm, but is only available in jpeg. Panasonic claim that using that feature in the FZ1000 that I have, there is no IQ loss I admit I don't understand it. With the GX8, the resolution would be ~5mp. The surfer was so far away that with the naked eye he was little more than a speck. With the a6000/a6300 the resolution is 12mp.įinally, I've included a surf shot at 4mp (extended tele function) with lens zoomed to 300mm. That should be very nice and quite usable. With the GX8, the resolution of the sensor crop image would be 10mp. The upper image was shot at full (16mp) resolution the lower image was shot at 8mp with "extended tele." (Both images using Lumix 100-300mm at full zoom.) If you enlarge, the lower image is cleaner. I have uploaded a couple of 100% crops one taken at 16mp and the other at 8mp using the "extended tele" sensor crop feature. (In addition, at very long range it's much easier to see the subject.) My own test images (with the GX7) suggest that the answer is yes. One nice feature of the GX cameras (shared with cameras like the a6000/a6300) is sensor-crop "zoom" which increases the effective reach of any lens by using only the central portion of the sensor at reduced resolution.īut is it better than simply shooting a full-res image and then cropping in post? I have been shooting with the GX7 for a couple of years and just ordered the GX8. Many people who shoot at great distances are trying to figure out ways to get more reach without breaking the bank. ![]()
